CASSE WITH BACK TO BACK GRAND SLAM GOLD – 4 MEDALS FOR TEAM IPPONGEAR

With less than half a year left until the Olympic Games, the IJF calendar is packed. Some athletes are chasing decisive ranking points, some are looking to secure a seeded position, whilst others are battling against a teammate for an Olympic spot. No matter what, the coming months are going to be intense. This weekend offered another chance for the athletes to prove themselves, as the IJF world tour had once again come to Uzbekistan for the Tashkent Grand Slam.

Tara Babulfath: Bronze in the weight class -48 kg

On the opening day of competition, teenage rising star, the only 18 years old Tara Babulfath of Sweden, picked up the first medal for team IPPONGEAR, as she claimed the bronze medal in the -48 kg category. Babulfath won her first medal at the IJF world tour two weeks ago, as she rose to the highest spot of the podium at the Grand Slam in Baku and this weekend, the Swedish lightweight could pick up her second IJF medal, as well as valuable points for the Olympic ranking list.

Matthias Casse: Gold in the weight class -81 kg

One of the most consistent athletes on the IJF world tour is without a doubt Matthias Casse of Belgium. The world number 1 in the -81 kg category rarely leaves a competition empty handed and this weekend, he was able to claim yet another Grand Slam title and his 10th Grand Slam medal. It was Casse’s second Grand slam title within just a month, showcasing him as a clear contender to the Olympic title.

Shamil Borchashvili: Silver in the weight class -81 kg

In the final Casse defeated another IPPPONGEAR athlete, Shamil Borchashvili of Austria, who was awarded the silver medal. Borchashvili just missed out on a medal in Baku two weeks ago, but this week he was able to swop the 5th place for a spot in the final. What will next week’s event on home ground, the Upper Austria Grand Prix, bring for Borchashvili?

Anna Maria Wagner: Bronze in the weight class -78 kg

The last medal for Team IPPONGEAR was won by Anna Maria Wagner of Germany, who picked up a bronze medal in the -78 kg category. Wagner has begun her season in style, winning, first the Paris Grand Slam and this weekend, claiming yet another Grand Slam medal. The only thing between Wagner and her chance to fight for a second Olympic medal, is German team mate, Alina Böhm, however Anna’s latest results has spoken for themselves, stating how the tall German is on great form.
