Golden IPPONGEAR debut for Team Germany in Baku

This weekend, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. It proved to be a very succesful weekend for Team IPPONGEAR, as not less than eleven IPPONGEAR athletes managed to book their spot at the podium. This weekend marked the beginning of a new era for Team Germany, as the German athletes stepped on the tatami wearing IPPONGEAR for the first time. We are very proud to welcome such a strong team to the IPPONGEAR family!

Anna Monta Olek: Gold in the weight category -78 kg

First and foremost, Anna Monta Olek of Germany claimed the top spot in the weight category -78 kg. The only 22-years-old Olek is still one of the newer faces on the IJF World Tour but has already made her mark on the -78 kg category, having won multiple IJF medals and climbed to the Top 10 on the World Ranking List. This weekend, the young German could be thrilled to add a second gold medal to her rapidly growing collection.

Alina Böhm: Silver in the weight category -78 kg

Runner-up in this weight category was Olek’s teammate, Alina Böhm, another German who is always a force to be reckoned with in the -78 kg category. This weekend, Böhm could celebrate her 10th medal on the IJF World Tour.

With no less than three athletes in the Top-10 on the World Ranking List - World Rank leader Anna-Maria Wagner, Double European Champion Alina Böhm and rising star Anna Monta Olek - there is no doubt that Germany is one of the most dominating forces in this category.

Szofi Ozbas: Gold in the weight category -70 kg

Hungary’s Szofi Ozbas made the step from the weight category -63 kg to -70 kg this weekend and what a way to make a debut in a new category! In the end of the day Ozbas could find herself on top of the podium claiming her first ever Grand Slam title. Despite having won not less than eight medals on the IJF World Tour already, it was the first time of her career that Ozbas was able to claim the top spot at the podium - What a day for the 23-years-old Hungarian.

Lara Cvjetko: Bronze in the weight category -70 kg

Ozbas could share the podium with another IPPONGEAR athlete, Lara Cvjetko of Croatia, who managed to capture a bronze medal. Cvjetko is on great form and has not missed out on the podium at a Grand Slam in almost a year. This weekend, the Croat could celebrate picking up her first IJF medal of the year.

Helena Vukovic: Bronze in the weight category +78 kg

Cvjetko’s teammate Helena Vukovic could celebrate winning her second Grand Slam medal of her career, as she was able to book her spot on the podium in the +78 kg category.

Mascha Ballhaus: Silver in the weight category -52 kg

Germany’s Mascha Ballhaus made her first appearance at the IJF World Tour after the Olympic Games and she made her comeback in style and managed to go all the way to the final in the -52 kg category. In the end of the day, she was awarded a good silver medal.

Ayumi Leiva Sanchez: Bronze in the weight category -52 kg

In the same category, Spanish Ayumi Leiva Sanchez was as well able to claim her spot on the podium, as she clinched a bronze medal in the category. After capturing a bronze medal in Paris two weeks ago, the Spaniard could celebrate her second IJF medal of year.

Seija Ballhaus: Bronze in the weight category -57 kg

In the -57 kg category, Mascha Ballhaus’ twin sister, Seija Ballhaus, managed to claim another medal for the Ballhaus household, as she was able to come away with a bronze medal in the -57 kg category.

Andrea Stojadinov: Bronze in the weight category -48 kg

In the lightest women’s weight category, Serbia’s Andrea Stojadinov was able to come away with a bronze medal. Stojadinov narrowly missed out on a podium spot at the Grand Slam in Paris two weeks ago but this weekend, she was able to swop the 5th place for a spot at the podium.

Jorre Verstraeten: Bronze in the weight category -60 kg

In the men’s lightweight division, a bronze medal went to long time Team IPPONGEAR representative Jorre Verstraeten of Belgium, who could celebrate his first medal of the year. Just as Stojadinov, Verstraeten just missed out on a spot at the podium at the Paris Grand Slam but this weekend, he managed to secure a medal.

Lubjana Piovesana: Bronze in the weight category -63 kg

Austria’s Lubjana “Lulu” Piovesana did as well capture her first medal of the year, as she was able to clinch a bronze medal in the weight category -63 kg. It was as well Piovesana’s first competition at the IJF World Tour after the Olympic Games in Paris, where she ended with a good 5th place. This weekend, she made her comeback to the World Tour by securing her 5th IJF medal for Austria.
