Hungary with 3 new European Judo Champions U23

The last Championships of this year took place in Russia last weekend as the u23 European Championships was held in Izhevsk. Many of our athletes travelled to Russia to seek glory and they achieved exactly that.

Szofi Ozbas once again showed that she is one to be remembered as she added another Championship title to her collection. She won the gold medal in the -63 kg after winning all of her fights by IPPON.

On day 3, the national anthem was played once again, even twice. The first gold medal was won by Junior World and European Silver Medalist Roland Goz in -90 kg, who managed to turn his two second place finishes into a gold at this final competition of the year.

His teammate Richard Sipocz has already marked himself on the IJF Senior World Tour by picking up a bronze medal in the Grand Prix in Budapest this summer. After finishing 3rd at the recent Junior World Championships, he looked to redeem himself and take home the gold medal. Defeating all of his opponents each in less than 2 minutes, he deserved to claim his top spot on the podium.

The success for Hungary was never ending as Benedek Toth in -81 kg also delivered a superb performance on day 2 of competition. The youngster showed consistency in some hard fights and clinched his bronze medal and spot on the podium.

Also, Mercedesz Szigetvari in +78 kg followed her teammates’ medal success. She won a bronze medal of her own in just 13 seconds in the bronze medal match. In the same category, the other bronze medal match took place with two IPPON GEAR athletes as Czech Marketa Paulusova and Croatian Zrinka Miocic battled it out for the other bronze medal. After a dynamic match where both threw for wazaari, Miocic captured the bronze medal after holding her opponent in newaza. Strong work from these ladies!

Croatia claimed another medal when Tihea Topolovec finished her bronze medal match in just 15 seconds and earned a spot on the -57 kg podium. Great to see you up there!

Wachid Borchashvili in the -73 kg blasted through his preliminary fights and found himself in the bronze medal match. He battled it out for 7 minutes and then finished with a massive IPPON and left no doubt he was the bronze medalist. Amazing work!

Jelle Snippe, who fights for The Netherlands, also had a great day as he displayed nice judo in the -100 kg category and clinched the bronze medal on the last day of competitions.

Also, fifth places went to Kitti Kovacs, Renata Zachova and Anders Violic.

A very successful Championships indeed for the IPPON GEAR team, especially for Hungary and their rising stars. We cannot wait to see them take on the seniors!
