Scheibel delivers golden performance

Once again, our athletes travelled to an EJU European Judo Open, this time in Tallinn, Estonia. With a total of just 292 athletes, the categories were strong and multiple of the athletes of the World Tour competed at this event, too. For the IPPON GEAR team, it was yet another successful weekend.

Manuel Scheibel in -66 kg transferred his bronze medal from two weeks ago in Luxembourg to a golden one here in Tallinn just as we had expected. The number one seed lived up to the expectations and defeated five strong opponents to stand on top of the podium! Keep it going, Manuel!

Estonia picked up two medals on home soil. The first one went to Klen Kristofer Kaljulaid, who usually fights on the World Tour in -90 kg, as he picked up a bronze medal and a spot on the podium in front of his home crowd. The number three seed would sure have loved to hear the national anthem in front of his home crowd. However, in this strong category bronze is a great performance!

In the category above, his teammate Grigori Minaskin also clinched a bronze medal. To the number one seed’s disappointment, he lost out in the semifinal in a close match but bounced back in the bronze medal match scoring not only IPPON but also waza-ari. Great stuff!

Also, Austria was represented with the lightweight Katharina Tanzer in -48 kg. She could turn her bronze medal loss in Luxembourg around and made it to the final and clinched herself the silver medal. Great work!

In the same category, Mira Ulrich of Germany picked up the second European Open medal of her career. It was a delight for the German lightweight to return to Tallinn where she picked up her first European Open bronze medal in 2016 and could repeat that performance on day one. Keep the medals coming, Mira! We believe in you!

Emilie Sook of Denmark in the -70 kg gave Denmark a bronze medal on the second day of competition. After losing out in the semi-final, she was determined to get on the podium and after a hard match, she went for the throw in the golden score and secured herself a spot on the podium! Great to see you back there, Emmy!

Some good performances from our athletes this weekend. The IJF World Tour moves to Abu Dhabi for the Judo Grand Slam in two weeks where even more of our athletes will be back to chase Olympic points and medals! Stay tuned.
